ATEM auto switching for podcast production

What the ATEM handles
ATEM switchers are built for live input switching, preview/program operation, recording and streaming on supported models, and audio mixing. Blackmagic lists ATEM Mini Pro features such as HDMI inputs, USB webcam output, Fairlight audio mixer controls, recording, direct streaming, and multiview, which makes it a strong center for small podcast studios.
What Companion adds
Companion can run actions when a button is pressed or triggered externally, and it supports action groups for more complex sequences. The public ATEM module lists commands for setting program and preview inputs, running macros, controlling media players, recording, streaming, and controlling audio inputs.
That matters because a podcast camera change is rarely only a camera change. You may want a lower third, a light scene, a recording marker, or a macro to fire when the show moves from the wide shot to a guest close-up.
How to automate a multicam podcast
- Build the ATEM input map.Label each camera, media source, and remote feed before creating automation rules.
- Create Companion buttons for repeatable states.Keep actions like intro, host close-up, guest close-up, wide shot, and break bumper easy to test manually.

- Verify every camera input label matches the automation map.
- Run a short cross-talk test before the real episode starts.
