Podcast camera follows audio vs audio follows video
A lot of podcasters describe the goal as “video follows audio” or “camera follows microphone.” ATEM switchers have a related feature called audio follows video, but that is not the same thing as automatically switching cameras to whoever is talking.
What “audio follows video” means
Blackmagic ATEM audio controls let you choose whether an input is always on or set to AFV. In AFV mode, the audio for that input is sent to program only while the related video input is on air. Blackmagic documentation also notes that AFV can crossfade audio as inputs change, which keeps transitions smoother than hard audio cuts.
In plain production language: if camera 2 has embedded HDMI audio and camera 2 is live, that audio can come up with the camera. When the switcher leaves camera 2, the audio can leave the mix too.
When AFV is useful
- Remote guest feeds: if a laptop or hardware decoder carries both the guest video and guest audio, AFV can keep that pair together.
- Media playback: a video bumper, trailer, or clip can bring its own audio into program only while the clip is live.
- Single-camera event inputs: when a camera source is expected to carry the complete sound for that shot, AFV keeps setup simple.
When you actually want video to follow audio
For a seated podcast with separate microphones, AFV can be the wrong default. If the host microphone only turns on when the host camera is live, you may lose reactions, laughter, or short replies while another camera is on program. In that setup, a stable spoken-word mix should stay on while camera automation decides the shot.

Sync and delay matter
Blackmagic manuals discuss audio delay because external analog audio can arrive ahead of video that has passed through cameras, frame syncs, scalers, or other production gear. If you route podcast microphones through an audio interface or mixer, check sync with a short clap test before recording a full episode.
Podcast AFV rule of thumb
Use AFV for sources where the audio belongs to the video source. Keep primary podcast microphones in the main mix when the conversation should remain audible across camera cuts.
