How to automate a multicam podcast

Start with clean microphone inputs

Automatic multicam switching depends on knowing who is speaking. The cleanest setup gives each host or guest a separate microphone channel before the final podcast mix is combined. That makes it much easier for autoswitching rules to tell the difference between a real speaker change, cross-talk, and room noise.

Map microphones to cameras

Every speaker should have a default camera. For a simple studio, that might be host mic to camera 1, guest mic to camera 2, co-host mic to camera 3, and wide shot to camera 4. Once that map is stable, your software can turn “guest is speaking” into “put guest camera on air.”

Create autoswitching rules

1. Use a speaker hold time.Wait briefly before switching so short laughs and acknowledgements do not create distracting cuts.
2. Set a minimum shot duration.A multicam podcast should feel directed, not nervous. Minimum shot timing keeps the edit watchable.
3. Use wide shots for overlap.When two or more people talk at once, a wide angle often feels more natural than rapidly switching between close-ups.
4. Keep manual override nearby.Automation should run the normal show, while a producer can still force a wide shot, bumper, mute, or stop-recording action.
